    Weight reduction benefits every aspect of vehicle operation, from acceleration and deceleration to cornering. Lightweighting tires and wheels, known as the unsprung mass, is particularly effective. The SW388, a forged aluminum wheel iconic to SPOON SPORTS, was named for its 3.88kg weight. When it was first released in 1996, its lightness astonished the world.

    However, a quarter century after the release of the original model, wheel safety standards have changed dramatically, making weight reduction extremely difficult. Still, we believe that lightweighting is the optimal solution for a smooth driving experience, and we set a target weight of 3.88kg for the new SW388 developed for the N-ONE. While the wheel is the same 15-inch size as the original model, current strength standards are extremely strict, making it extremely difficult to achieve using conventional manufacturing methods.

    Our engineers repeatedly performed fatigue strength simulations and analyses on the desktop, created prototypes, and conducted strength tests. By incorporating numerous new technologies, this wheel achieved a weight of 3.84kg, lighter than the target. (15x5.0J+45)

    SW388 Special Shape

    1. Stepped Shape Center Pad

    The wheel center surface is stepped (step-like), increasing rigidity around the mounting hole while reducing weight.

    2. Wave Shape Well

    A portion of the well (valve seat area) is processed into a wave shape to reduce weight. Heat dissipation and rigidity are also improved.

    3. Omega Cross Section

    Spokes The cross section of the spoke is hollowed out to reduce weight. Heat dissipation and rigidity are further improved.

    4. Arch Mounting Surface A donut-

    shaped groove resembling the arch of the foot is created on the hub joint surface, concentrating the crimping pressure on the outer periphery to avoid stress concentration and increasing wheel strength and mounting rigidity. ?The layout of the hub bolts and recesses is the key to the SW388 design.

    5. Convex Cross Section Bead Seat

    Ensures strength and rigidity in the bead seat area, which receives stress from the tire, and prevents wheel and tire slippage when high-grip tires are installed.

    Weight reduction has a big impact on car acceleration and deceleration, cornering, and maneuvering. Since wheels play a huge role in all the above, their weight reduction means a lot to the car. The iconic forged aluminum SW388 named after its actual weight of 3.88 kg first came out in 1996 and surprised the world with its lightness.

    25 years since then however safety standards have significantly changed and reducing the weight became extremely difficult. We nevertheless decided to set the same 3.88kg target weight for these new N-One wheels.

    It was not easy to achieve with the same production method based on the current standards, even though it has the same 15-inch size.

    Hours of desk work, fatigue strength simulation and analysis, prototypes and tests repeated by the engineers over and over again finally paid off, and we are proud to announce even lighter weight of 3.84kg.

    Special arched donut shaped gouge to ensure mounting rigidity and avoid stress concentration by crimping the surface pressure on the outer part. Hub bolts and hollow hub representing iconic SW388 design.

    Convex cross-section bead sheet

    • Strengthened bead sheet part that takes the stress from the tire, improved rigidity, wheel, and high grip tire slip prevention.
