Importance of ECU
Although the foundations of engine tuning are increase of the amount of intake air, the improvement of combustion, and reduction of friction, it is impossible to pull out the potential performance by tuning up hard wares, such as camshaft, valve timing, and turbine unless either A/F ratio or its ignition timing is proper. In order to pull out the 100% potential which hardware has, it is necessary to make A/F ratio, ignition timing, idling state, and etc. perfectly by controlling ECU.
ECU development with repeated tests
We gave large numbers of the tests both on the desk and tracks to get the data of every possible situation in the development of TOMEI ECU.
(1) Data accumulation on the engine bench
Engines of many patterns were built on the engine bench. And the optimized value of the fuel control and the ignition control according to the RPM and the load of each engine are discovered, by checking generating torque, A/F ratio, exhaust temperature, and so on.
Especially for the ignition timing, since it concerns with engine power and reliability (knocking) closely, it is a very important point. Therefore, lots of measurement is performed in quest of the ideal ignition timing (value of ignition advance) where engine power goes up most.
By checking whether the knocking is occurred with a high sensitivity microphone at each rotation and load on a bench. It is the work that needs immense time and effort and the special equipment, as well as the engineer’s technology, and that is only done by automaker or racing engine maker. If ignition timing is advanced avoiding knocking by this work, the potential output of the engine can be drawn out with the highest reliability.
(2) Data accumulation by actual driving
On the driving test for TOMEI ECU, while high precision A/F meter and data logger are carried in a circuit to give tests to the limits, such as time attack, drag, and drift driving, test is also carried out repeatedly in every day, and the response in the usual operation, MPG, and the drive feeling are tested from many aspects. In TOMEI, development of ECU is based on a vast quantity of data accumulated by those tests so as to be used in any situations, being satisfied with any drivers.
