We have invested months of intense R\u0026amp;D in developing an inlet which leaves no room for compromise. VOLUME - FLOW QUALITY - TEMPERATURE are the 3 main design criteria which we sought to meet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e1) VOLUME : Inlet Diameters - Eventuri 103mm : Stock 72mm. Outlet Diameters - Eventuri 74mm : Stock 56.4mm. Clearly with significantly larger internal diameter sizes, the Eventuri elbow encapsulates a much larger internal volume which de-restricts the flow path to the turbo.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2) FLOW QUALITY : Having just a large internal volume is no good unless the flow path also allows for smooth airflow to the turbo. By using high temperature Prepreg Carbon Fiber we have managed to achieve a smooth internal surface. In contrast, the stock and other aftermarket elbows are all made from cast aluminium which end up with a rough internal surface. This coupled with the smooth curvature of the elbow results in a flow path which minimises turbulence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e3) TEMPERATURE : The final criteria was to minimise the conduction of heat into the airflow. The stock inlet is directly connected to the turbo and so immediately conducts heat as the turbo spools. Our system uses a machined flange which connects to the turbo and then a silicon coupler with an integrated thermal spacer to keep the carbon elbow from having direct contact with the turbo. This barrier coupled with the low through-thickness thermal conductivity of carbon fiber results in less heat being transferred to the airflow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cb\u003ePerformance:\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eFlow Bench Testing\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe conducted flow rate tests using a Superflow SF-1020 to measure the maximum flow rate possible at a pressure drop of 28\" H2O. Tests were done on the same day in controlled conditions using the same test jig for each elbow. The results show how restrictive the stock elbow is, which we have managed to improve from 42% using the stock flange up to 58% in maximum possible flow rate using the larger GTX flange. Since the RHD version requires clearance for the brake fluid reservoir we added a scallop into the side which reduces the volume of the tube but still retains a significant increase in flow rate over stock with an increase of 52% over stock using the GTX Flange.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDyno Testing\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOur carbon elbow has been independently tested by reputable tuners globally. We designed the shape with a continuous curvature and maximised the internal volume without affecting the airflow negatively. The inlet is finished in raw carbon so has no clear coat - which would not be able to withstand the heat generated from the turbo and exhaust manifold. The carbon construction allows us to keep the inside flow surface smooth which helps with reducing the surface friction and in turn allows airflow to move easier. We ensure strength and rigidity by maintaining a 2mm wall thickness throughout the part. Finally for added protection there is a heat reflective layer applied where the tube crosses the exhaust manifold. This reduces the radiant heat absorbed by the tube. The advantage of using carbon fiber over the traditionally used cast aluminium is mainly down to the thermal conductivity and the ability to keep the inside smooth. Since the face of the turbo is directly connected to our CNC machined flange, we designed a silicon coupler to also act as a thermal barrier between the carbon tube and the metal flange. Internally the silicon has a spacer which separates the carbon and metal surfaces. The RS3 8Y intake system caters for all power levels from stock to those exceeding 1000whp. This intake system has been developed to offer the highest possible flow rate whilst maintaining the lowest intake temperatures possible. Each component has been designed to provide the turbo with a smooth and free flowing path. The intake tube has an internal diameter of 103mm or just over 4\" and has a smooth curvature from the filter housing all the way to the turbo inlet. The filter itself has been specifically designed for this intake and has a huge outer diameter of 210mm or 8.3\" with a filtration surface area of over 130,000mm^2. The patented Venturi housing has been designed to provide the maximum internal volume possible for the RS3 engine bay space available and provides laminar flow to the turbo tube. Finally the duct seals the filter opening to the front slam panel but is not restricted by just the stock entry feed. We have lifted the front of the duct to now provide an extra opening behind the hood which is equivalent to an extra 7\" diameter hole for the intake to draw from. During testing, Eurocharged tuners commented that they were able to make more power at a lower boost setting using our stage 3 intake in comparison to other systems they had been using. The resulting filter has an outside diameter of 210mm or 8.3\" and when flow tested with just the carbon housing is able to flow up to 940 CFM at 28\" H2O. The filter medium is ISO tested to ensure that filtration is in line with OEM standards and is also dry. Since this was designed to support high power builds, we found that the stock openings in the slam panel could cause a restriction at high flow demand. So we lifted the top surface of the duct and created an opening above the slam panel which is able to draw in cold air from behind the hood shut. This extra opening is equivalent to a hole with a diameter of over 7\" and completely derestricts the stock cold air feed. The stage 3 duct was designed to have the maximum internal volume possible within the given geometry of the engine bay. Even with intercoolers and charge coolers, it is important to minimise Inlet Air Temperatures (IATs) as these cooling devices work with an efficiency ratio so the output air temperature is affected by the input air temperature. Derestricting the intake by using open cones, even if heat shielded will inevitably pull in hot air from the engine bay. Our system being fully sealed solves this problem while still derestricting the flow path using bigger volumes. To demonstrate, we data logged air temperatures using thermocouples just before each turbo. Comparisons were taken between stock and Eventuri on the same day with the same ambient conditions. Our M3 was allowed to heat soak and then it was accelerated from 30mph to 90mph in 6th gear to measure the change in temperature across each run. At 90mph, throttle was released and brakes were applied to 30mph at which point the car accelerated again to 90mph. A total of 3 pulls were made with both intake configurations.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe first graph shows the temperatures on before both turbos with the stock airbox on the left and the Eventuri intake on the right. Due to scaling, the axes are not perfectly matched between both graphs but the numbers can be clearly seen. As expected, the RHS of the intake showed similar data between stock and Eventuri since the flow path and materials are similar. However, the LHS intake shows a significant improvement in IAT for the Eventuri. This can be seen in the second graph where the 2 charts are overlaid. On each successive pull the Eventuri shows a lower IAT as compared to stock and also the spike in temperature as throttle is lifted is significantly lower with the Eventuri. Applying such an intricate was only possible due to the advanced manufacturing technique we employed to make the inlets, where traditional methods would not have given the accuracy required. The dimples create an \"air cushion\" affect over the surface of the inlet which then allows the main body of air to \"slip\" with less friction through the body into the turbo. This results in a more even velocity profile in a dimpled tube with the net affect being a higher velocity for the same boundary conditions. This area of the engine bay stays at ambient temperatures while the car is in motion and so the intake is able to draw in air without being restricted to the small opening behind the grill. We did not extend the duct to the other side of the engine bay to use the second opening in the grill simply because of the abrupt flow angle and the restriction in space between the engine and the bonnet catch. Furthermore, using the second opening would stop cold air from entering the engine bay to assist with reducing overall heat soak. The OEM rear tube has a sharp internal bend radius and at high flow rates, this can cause unwanted turbulence which can affect the efficiency of the turbo. We redesigned the rear tube to allow for a smoother bend which also allowed for a more optimum positioning of the filter housing. In order to cope with the heat at the back of the engine, this tube is made from a thermoplastic with glass fiber reinforcement. There is also a CNC machined reinforcement ring at the rear connection where the clamp would be secured. This prevents distortion under heavy clamping pressure - as used in the OEM tube as well. Since this is a turbocharged engine, heat and volume were the main considerations during development. This intake system has been developed to offer the highest possible flow rate whilst maintaining the lowest intake temperatures possible. Each component has been designed to provide the turbo with a smooth and free flowing path. By ensuring a sealed system we have improved on the IAT's of the OEM airbox whilst at the same time increasing the internal volume to reduce the pressure drop and therefore reduce pumping losses of the turbo. The systems were tested several times on a dyno jet in both configurations to get a repeatable result. In this instance the addition of the intake hits the load limit and the ECU closes the throttle to bring the load back down after 6600 rpm. This only happened on the dyno and not on the road. The logs below show the temperatures at the intake and also at the after the intercooler. As can be seen, there is a measurable difference in temperatures at both locations. The carbon pod shrouds the reverse mounted filter and smoothly shapes the airflow down to the MAF section which then connects to the rear inlet tube. This changes the flow path from the OEM airbox where airflow enters the front of the airbox, changes direction by 90 degrees to travel through the panel filter and then changes direction again by 90 degrees to move through the MAF section. Our system is a lot more direct with airflow entering the front of the filter housing and and moving into the MAF section without any abrupt direction changes. We maintained as large a volume as possible all the way to the front of the engine bay and derestricted the front of the duct by creating an opening just behind the bumper where the bonnet would close. This area of the engine bay stays at ambient temperatures while the car is in motion through the help of our additional scoop and so the intake is able to draw in air without being restricted to the small opening on the slam panel. We did not extend the duct to the other side of the engine bay to use the second opening in the grill simply because of the abrupt flow angle and the restriction in space between the engine and the bonnet catch. Furthermore, using the second opening would stop cold air from entering the engine bay to assist with reducing overall heat soak. The OEM rear tube has a sharp internal bend radius and at high flow rates, this can cause unwanted turbulence which can affect the efficiency of the turbo. Several designs were tested in order to arrive at the most optimum shape which we then made from a high temperature carbon fiber. We redesigned the rear tube to allow for a smoother bend which also allowed for a more optimum positioning of the filter housing.
